Advent Week 3 - Joy - Behold The Lamb of God

Week 3 - Joy

Begin

Theme for the week: Joy

Prayer for the week: God of justice and peace, from the heavens you rain down mercy and kindness, that all on earth may stand in awe and wonder before your marvelous deeds. Raise our heads in expectation, that we may yearn for the coming day of the Lord and stand without blame before your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

* Prayer adapted from the Revised Common Lectionary collection through Vanderbilt University.

IMAGINE (Candle lighting)

Today we light this candle (pink) as a reminder of your faithfulness to your people. We light this candle that your joy might shine bright in our lives. Throughout the generations, you have proven you are trustworthy. You have proven that you will never leave us nor forsake us. We light this candle as we look to the future and trust you will prove yourself even more.

(The person lighting the candle can say, Jesus is here. Everyone else, by his spirit he is here.)

STORY

*As you read, instruct everyone present to listen for a word, phrase, or idea that captures your attention. Especially look for the imagery present and how the arrival of Jesus is depicted through everyday life. After reading, take a few minutes to share.

Psalms 79:1-9 (NIV)

O God, the nations have invaded your inheritance;
they have defiled your holy temple,
they have reduced Jerusalem to rubble.
They have left the dead bodies of your servants
as food for the birds of the sky,
the flesh of your own people for the animals of the wild.
They have poured out blood like water
all around Jerusalem,
and there is no one to bury the dead.
We are objects of contempt to our neighbors,
of scorn and derision to those around us.

How long, Lord? Will you be angry forever?
How long will your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out your wrath on the nations
that do not acknowledge you,
on the kingdoms
that do not call on your name;
for they have devoured Jacob
and devastated his homeland.

Do not hold against us the sins of past generations;
may your mercy come quickly to meet us,
for we are in desperate need.
Help us, God our Savior,
for the glory of your name;
deliver us and forgive our sins
for your name’s sake.

Prepare

SKETCH

As we read, feel free to use this space, a journal, or a roll of butcher paper to create. Draw a picture, write a poem, or doodle. Also, record what captured each person’s imagination while reading the scripture.

BLOOM

Pray for each other, your family, and the opportunity to be light this Advent season.

Create

DREAM

Consider: How do you feel when you experience something that you know deep down in your bones isn’t right? Imagine if your life and community was in such a bad way, that everything you saw was wrong. Where would you turn for help? The Israelites turned to God to deliver them when they were at their lowest. They looked forward to the day when Jesus would come to set them free. During this Advent season, if there is something that isn’t as it should be, share it with your family and pray for God to deliver those affected. If you are unable to think of something, pray for those around the world experiencing hardships.

BLESSING

Numbers 6:24-26 (The Message)

“God bless you and keep you, God smile on you and gift you, God look you full in the face and make you prosper.”
